How Organization Can Shift Your Mindset and Your Space

Self-care practices can come in all different formats. For some, it might look like going for a run, cozying up with a movie, disconnecting from devices, or doing some yoga. For me, I like to wake up early in the morning and meditate to start the day. When we take time for ourselves, allowing our mind and body to decompress, we end up feeling rejuvenated.

Similarly, when we take time to organize our living spaces, this also impacts our mental health and overall well-being. It might surprise you just how big of an impression something as simple as tackling your "junk drawer" will have on you.

#1: Use Organization as a Grounding Practice

Getting organized can function as a grounding exercise by fully engaging you and bringing you back to the present. This is why organizing is generally a fan favorite when it comes to managing anxiety or stress. By doing activities that make you move your body and use your hands, you allow yourself to shift focus away from your internal dialogue and feelings.

#2: Create Calm by Clearing Clutter

By routinely removing clutter, you create a calmer living environment. Organizing, even small spaces, one at a time, has been proven to significantly reduce stress, enable self-empowerment, and make everyday life feel more manageable. A well-organized and decluttered area promotes a relaxing atmosphere, which, in turn, improves focus and productivity.

#3: Make Mundane Chores More Mindful

Making the mindless chores more mindful might sound like a daunting task, but this is actually much easier than it sounds. Being more mindful when doing the mundane, such as chores, simply means to be present.

If you can focus on your task at hand, as opposed to letting your mind wander and ruminate about your laundry list of other things that you need to get done, you will ensure that you get the most out of your time. By practicing being mindful, you're essentially reprogramming yourself to be kind, non-judgmental, patient, and present.

#4: Let Order Inspire Healthy Habits

When your home is in order, this can encourage other health habits to follow, leading to a better life. An organized space feels lighter, happier, more accessible, and more manageable. All of this opens up time and room for you to grow and develop new habits.

For example, an organized bedroom can reduce stress and anxiety, which can lead to improved sleep quality, which can have a positive domino effect from there. You might feel so good after a few days in your restful sleep environment that you may want to tackle your kitchen next, making it easier to plan and execute a healthier lifestyle.

#5: Embracing True Minimalism

Mastering the art of true minimalism, very simply means, to live intentionally. Instead of buying in bulk, buy what you need. Prioritize decluttering before you add more. Choose experiences over possessions. Simplify your day-to-day living.

These are all small, but intentional ways in which you can practice living like a true minimalist. The goal is to narrow down what is truly important to you and to remove the rest of the noise. The truly beautiful part of this lifestyle is that it is curated to each individual. What may be essential to me may be completely different from your priorities, and that is completely okay.

An example of this is, I like to have a full wardrobe, with lots of daily options. If I were to see a dress that I wanted to buy, I would need to justify my purchase to myself. For me, this might look like, assessing if I have anything similar already, identifying where I would wear it and how often, waiting at least 48 hours before making the purchase, and seeing what I could remove from my closet to make room for this new purchase.

One of the most important lessons that I have gained with this lifestyle is also learning to say no. "Celeste, yes it's beautiful, but you don't need the dress at the moment." This becomes a win for myself, my wallet, and my organized closet.

Organization is a wonderful form of self-care. It enables us to feel calm, grounded, connected, and in control. By choosing to live more intentionally, you are also choosing to improve your life and to build healthy habits, which have an immensely positive impact overall. Acknowledging that you can like and want something, but that you don't need it, is empowering. Keeping your home organized should feel like an accomplishment and serve as a reminder that you are worth investing in. Your mental health and well-being will thank you.
