Today, window treatments and coverings have come a long way with safety measures in mind, especially for young children and pets. Many homes have entirely switched to cordless window coverings or motorized shade systems to prevent the risk of strangulation. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an estimated 9 children under the age of 5 die annually as a result of strangulation from window cords. Between 2009-2021 alone, the CPSC reported that there were over 200 incidents of child strangulation among children under 8.

Unfortunately, statistics aren't as readily available for pets; however, the same principles apply. Both children and pets can suffer harm from window cords, whether due to curiosity, play, etc. These statistics are alarming and something I always take into consideration when designing for my clients. It is important to be knowledgeable and to design smartly, helping my clients choose the right products for their homes and always putting safety first.

Expert Tips to Eliminate Hazards at Home

Eliminating all potential hazards at home is always my goal. Anything that has a long cord, even when it is attached to the wall, can be deemed hazardous. Even cords that are seemingly inaccessible can be dangerous because kids and pets can be guileful.

For this reason, many clients have returned to hand-drawn draperies or wands to draw them. Motorization is also great for a safer application. With so many family homes today, the market has definitely made these options more accessible and more customizable, which is fantastic.

Child-Safe Window Treatment Options

I like to recommend choices that keep everyone's babies safe and in mind. Window treatments that get my green light include:

  • Cordless

  • Motorized

  • Shutters

  • Roller

  • Cellular

  • Roman

These options provide the desired results without compromising safety. Cordless options ensure that curious little minds aren’t tempted to entangle themselves, posing a strangulation risk. Additionally, loose cords can also be a choking risk for littles and fur babies alike, with most cords ending in small plastic caps.

Our Commitment to Industry Standards

Although Celeste Jackson Interiors is not considered a workroom, we choose workrooms and shade manufacturers that adhere to the latest safety standards. In 2025, the industry standard for window safety is to design with the utmost safety in mind, focusing on averting accidental falls, as well as the protection of window coverings.

Due to this, the standard requires that the majority of window coverings sold in the U.S. are either cordless or have cords that are not easily accessible.

I'm a firm believer that knowledge is power, and I always ensure I am well-informed on industry standards so that I can make certain that I am bringing the most professional insight and experience forth for my clients.
