What Color Should I Paint My Front Door?

Dear CJ,

When we first purchased our home in our dream neighborhood, we loved the simplicity of the black front door. But after traveling abroad and seeing how other cultures incorporate fun colors into their front doors, ours now looks bland.

Can you guide us on choosing a paint color for our front door that we will love to come home to?

Appreciatively,

Brad W.

Dear Brad,

Thank you for reaching out to me! You came to the right place to find out more about choosing a paint color for your front door, because I am a big fan of choosing something that genuinely reflects who you are.

After traveling to places like Ireland and Italy, I started wondering why we should ever shy away from using a fun paint color on our front door. It’s a great way to brighten our return home after a long day of work and an excellent way to welcome guests.

Here are my suggestions for Selecting a Paint Color For Your Front Door That You'll Love for years...

Colors you love

These will generally be colors you have used in your interior, like shades of blue or green. Selecting the right shade of these tones should be done with thought and care. We have all driven by a home that stands out too much and just a bit off with the rest of the home. For selecting the right shade of color with confidence be sure to grab my Free Brochure “Selecting Color with Confidence.”

Utilizing the expert sites like Sherwin Williams is an excellent way to guide you with confidence.

A Pop of Color you always enjoy seeing

My brother owns a thatched cottage in County Kerry, Ireland. He has a red Dutch-style door for his front entrance. It adds such a welcoming feel to the guests who stay at Cottage Mary Rose, named after our Mother, who visited the cottage many times. It’s a classic look for a vintage home, which is why I chose to use it on my porch door towards the back of my house for my 1893 Farmhouse in the Village of Barrington, IL.

If you‘re bold enough, I also enjoy seeing a bright pop of color , such as Benjamin Moore 2021-30 Sunshine yellow.

Inspiration from your travels

Inspiration from your travels is another excellent way to choose a color for your front door. If you have ever been on a Mediterranean vacation like the Amalfi Coast or Greece they love to show their bold, bright, fun colors on their front doors. It’s as if you know the people who reside in these villas. Choosing a color that inspired you on a trip you loved will be a fun reminder of being there.

Search through your vacation photos or online for a travel photo showing a color that speaks to your heart. Then head over to your local paint specialist. They can guide you on finding a good match. Be sure to test it out before committing. You should love it or it’s not the right shade.

Colors that complement your exterior

If you are looking for a change and nothing to bold, look for a color that complements your brick or siding. There are a handful of colors that complement most brick or paint, such as a rich shade of navy blue like this or a russet color like this. You can often find inspiration on Pinterest for what to choose.

I hope this helps you find the perfect color for your front door.
