How to Identify Your Own Personal Interior Design Style

Every person has a unique personality, so it’s natural that every home should reflect those individual tastes, attitudes, memories, and lifestyles. Yes, your interior design style will speak volumes about your personality to everyone who enters your home, but more importantly, you will feel a sense of deep comfort and belonging. Understanding your design style is the key to creating a comfortable flowing home.

How can you do it? Follow these steps to start exploring…

Step 1: Gather Visual Inspiration Without Overthinking It

Pinterest is a great way to scan and save virtual styles and ideas that speak to you. Magazine surfing and clipping is another excellent way to create physical mood boards for what draws your eye and feels right. When doing these exercises, let your selections come naturally. Follow your instinct.

To help you get started, try searching different style keywords, such as traditional, transitional, modern, Mediterranean, mid-century, etc., to find what resonates with you most.

Step 2: Find Common Design Themes

Once you have an array of saved inspirational photos, sift through them to find common design themes. For example, you may see similar colors in your photos, like greens or blues, which may point you to include that color in your design. Or you may discover similar patterns, materials, or overall moods.

Note: Having more than one style show up as your favorite is typical. However, if this process feels overwhelming, I am happy to help you narrow down your choices. You can also check out my resource, Design with Your Favorite Color, for more ideas.

Step 3: Construct a Concept Board Based on Theme & Style

Once you’ve refined your favorite looks, narrow down the design details within each photo, channeling them into design boards for specific spaces in your home. Then, I can help you to determine the best way to translate these details into actionable steps for designing your home. Finally, you’ll have a focused design direction for your rooms before beginning to select furnishings. (P.S. This is exactly what we do for you when designing!)

Finding your interior design style is an essential part of the creative process for a well-balanced and beautiful home that speaks to you. This is a fun process and should be based more on feeling than thinking. Once you have your visual inspiration, I am happy to step in and help you pull it all together.
