The kitchen is where you and your family spend a lot of time preparing your meals, gathering as a family or couple, and breaking bread together. It's the space you nourish your body for your best self. It's so important that your food, utensils, and cookware are easy to access and don't cause you to get frustrated when you are in the midst of preparing your favorite meal. Your cabinets should be designed for ease. Custom cabinets are the best solution for doing so.

The Quality Difference in Custom Cabinetry

Although the inside of the cabinet is referred to as the "box" by stock cabinet manufacturers, our custom cabinet makers refer to it as "the interior." While mass producers of cabinetry often use particle board, our custom cabinet builders use a vinyl coated marine grade plywood for the cabinet interiors and a dovetailed maple solid for the sides of the drawers, with maple plywood bottom.

With custom cabinetry like ours, you see the difference and will experience the difference provided by the longevity after years of use.

Adding Custom Features to Fit your Cooking Style

There are so many fun features we can add when creating custom cabinets. We listen to what our clients are struggling with in their current kitchens and solve the problem with a variety of options.

For instance:

  • Hiding appliances but keeping them counter level to pull out and use with ease.

  • Pull-out utensil holders to keep them off the stove but conveniently located.

  • Pull-out spice or oil & vinegar cabinets that you can easily access.

  • Custom knife drawers made specifically for your knives.

  • Pull-out pantry shelves.

With custom cabinetry, there are no limits to what can be done.

Choosing The Right Cabinet Door Style

Selecting the door style will have the largest impact on creating the look you want, as well as the cost of the cabinets. The slab door works well for a modern aesthetic; it also is the least expensive.

The Shaker style is very popular and has a transitional look, making it the next most cost-efficient option. Raised panel doors offer more detail and will give a transitional or traditional look depending on how much detail the panel has. A door with applied molding will give you the most traditional look and will be the most expensive.

Once you have that decided, you’ll need to choose how you want the door to lay. Do you want a full overlay, partial overlay, or an inset door? Inset doors will be the most expensive and provide a little less storage than an overlay door, but they offer a classic look.

See my earlier blog post, The Complete Kitchen Design for more details on this subject.

The finish of the cabinets will also have a large impact on creating the look you want. We use maple for painted cabinets and other species for stained cabinetry such as walnut or alder.

Painted cabinets will cost less than stained cabinets because the wood quality required for stained finishes will be a higher grade. Glazing also increases the price on painted cabinets.
