A tidy bedroom for a child metamorphoses into improved organizational skills, responsibility, and self-autonomy. Additionally, it also can convey a sense of pride and aid in better sleep and mental wellness overall. All parents want the best for their kids, and kids thrive off of structure. This is largely due to the fact that systemized routine creates habits, which naturally transition into building blocks for success.

Today, I'm going to share with you my simple four-step method to help your child get and keep their bedrooms organized.

Step #1: Assess the Space

Assessing the space is always the first order of business. This is where you can apply your spatial reasoning skills. Does the room have proper-sized furniture, are the pieces placed in a way that maximizes the room, and do you have adequate working storage to ensure the functionality of the child's room?

Step #2: Sort the Room

The second step is to sort the room. Begin by sifting through books, clothes, toys, and papers and throw away or donate anything that is no longer serving. Clean everything and any items that find themselves without a home, place into like piles, for these will be the items in which you will need to create new or improve existing storage solutions for.

Step #3: Create a Routine

The third step in this method is to create a routine for your kids to follow. At the end of each day, your child should be empowered to not only know where all of their belongings go within their space but also to put back everything in its place.

Depending on your child's age, you can get creative with ways to enforce this new routine until it becomes a locked-in habit. A reward system or a visual checklist are two of my go-to recommendations.

Step #4: Lead by Example

The fourth and final step is to lead by example. Kids learn by observation and encouragement and will follow your lead. By creating simple daily time-frames to tidy up areas within your home, you, as the parent, won't have to try so hard to avoid the drama and big emotions that can come with the daunting web of dread associated with tidying large built up messes that accrue over time.

I like to set a timer and see if we can all work together to sort out the areas that we're responsible for before the buzzer goes off. It's important to note that teaching intentional productivity is key so that kids can learn to work with a sense of calm and ease, knowing that things are under control.

When a child's space, which is meant to be their sanctuary, is cluttered with books, clothes, toys, and supplies, it can quickly have an adverse impact and feel overwhelming. When you amplify that sense with the inability to be patient, independently organize, navigate, and regulate big feelings, it becomes more apparent why "cleaning your room" can feel like a huge undertaking.

By integrating my four step method into your home, your kids will learn to be empowered, responsible, and intentional with their belongings; making for great little helpers and humans!
